An sbi sukanya samriddhi yojana account is the same Government scheme you get at a post office, simply held at a State Bank of India branch. SBI allows the form to be completed in net banking, but you still have to visit the branch with documents and the first deposit.
We are an independent explainer, not a bank or government website, and the account itself is started only at an authorised bank branch or a post office. Bank facilities change often, so check with your branch before you go.
How the SBI sukanya samriddhi yojana form works
SBI uses a part-online, part-branch process. Reports describe it like this:
- Log in to SBI net banking with your own credentials.
- Go to the deposits and investments area (the menu has been called "Deposit and Investment") and choose the Sukanya Samriddhi option.
- Fill in the girl's details and your details as guardian.
- Print the filled form.
- Take the printout to your SBI branch with the documents and the first deposit of Rs 250.
- The branch verifies the papers and opens the account.
Menu names in net banking change from time to time, so follow the labels on your screen. If you do not use net banking, you can simply ask the branch for the paper form and fill it there. So "sbi sukanya samriddhi yojana account opening online" really means filling the form online, not finishing the whole account from home.
Documents for sukanya samriddhi yojana in SBI
SBI follows the same scheme rules as a post office. The scheme lists three papers: the opening form, the daughter's birth certificate and KYC of the parent or guardian. Branches usually ask for:
- the girl's birth certificate;
- identity and address proof of the parent or legal guardian, for example Aadhaar or PAN;
- photographs;
- an affidavit and birth certificates if you are opening a third account because of twins or triplets.
The girl must be below 10 on the day of opening. One girl can hold only one account in the whole country, whether at SBI, another bank or a post office. Full details are on our account opening page.
Same interest rate in every bank
Many people search for the "best bank" for this scheme, expecting different rates. There is no difference. The Ministry of Finance notifies one rate for the Sukanya Samriddhi Account every quarter, and nothing in the scheme rules ties the rate to a particular bank. SBI, a private bank and a post office all pay the same interest. It has been 8.2% a year since 1 January 2024; check the status panel above for this quarter's confirmed figure.
Be careful with bank product pages. Some still show old figures. One large bank's page showed 8.4%, a rate that applied years ago. Our interest rate page tracks the notified rate.
Which banks offer the Sukanya Samriddhi account
The scheme is available at every post office and at bank branches authorised by the Government. We could not obtain a current official list of authorised banks. A widely shared private list says 28 banks are authorised but names fewer than that, so we do not reproduce it here.
What we can say:
- SBI offers the account and has a page for it on its own website.
- HDFC Bank has a Sukanya Samriddhi product page.
- Large public sector banks and several big private banks are commonly reported to offer it.
If you bank with PNB, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Union Bank, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank or HDFC Bank, the simple step is to ask your home branch whether it opens Sukanya Samriddhi accounts. If a branch says no, a post office will always do it. See our post office guide.
Depositing online in a bank-held account
One practical reason to choose a bank is online deposits. Where the bank offers it, you can move money into a bank-held Sukanya account using the net banking or app of that bank. Each bank names the option differently, so search for the Sukanya or small savings section in your app or ask the branch.
Deposit rules do not change with the bank:
- a minimum of Rs 250 per financial year;
- a ceiling of Rs 1,50,000 per financial year;
- later deposits in multiples of Rs 50;
- deposits for 15 years from opening, maturity at 21 years.
Money that lands by the 5th is counted for that month's interest. The deposit rules page has the detail.
Moving an account between a post office and a bank
Under the scheme, an account can move from one post office or bank to another anywhere in the country. You can move from a post office to SBI, from SBI to another bank, or from a bank back to a post office. Interest still gets added when the financial year closes, even if the account moved during the year.
Secondary sources say the transfer is free if you show proof that the account holder or guardian has changed residence, and that a fee of Rs 100 applies otherwise. We have not seen this fee in an official text, so confirm it at the branch where your account is held now. Ask that branch how to start the transfer request.
Bank or post office: making the choice
Since the rate, limits, maturity and tax treatment are identical, choose based on what is easier for your family:
| Point | Bank branch | Post office |
|---|---|---|
| Interest rate | Same | Same |
| Opening | At branch (SBI's form can be filled online first) | At branch with Form-1 |
| Online deposits | Through the bank's own app or net banking, where offered | Through the IPPB app or DOP mobile banking |
| Tax treatment | Same | Same |

Is there an SBI sukanya samriddhi yojana form PDF I can fill up at home?
