Getting the sukanya samriddhi yojana documents ready before you visit is the main thing that decides whether the account opens in one trip. You need the opening form, your daughter's birth certificate and your own KYC papers, and she has to be under 10 on the day you apply.
We are an independent information site, not a government or bank website; your daughter's account can be opened only in person, at a post office counter or at an approved bank branch. Counters sometimes ask for extra papers, so call or visit your branch first.
Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account
The account always belongs to the daughter, but an adult opens and runs it for her. Under the scheme, that adult is the guardian, which means a natural parent (mother or father) or a legal guardian appointed for the child.
- Your daughter must still be under 10 when the branch opens her account.
- The account is meant for a girl child resident in India.
- The guardian operates the account until she turns 18. From then on she handles it, after giving the branch her own papers.
If your daughter is close to her tenth birthday, do not wait. Our age limit page explains exactly how the cut-off works.
Sukanya samriddhi yojana documents required
The scheme itself names three items: Form-1 (the opening form), proof of the daughter's birth, and KYC of the guardian. KYC, short for "know your customer", is the standard identity and address check for any savings account. This is what counters usually want to see:
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Form-1, filled and signed by the guardian | The application to open the account |
| Daughter's birth certificate | Proves her name and that she is under 10 |
| Guardian's identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN or similar) | KYC of the person who will operate the account |
| Guardian's address proof | KYC; Aadhaar often covers both identity and address |
| Photographs | For the account record |
| Affidavit plus birth certificates (only for twins or triplets) | Needed when a family asks for more than two accounts |
These are the documents required for sukanya samriddhi yojana at almost every counter. Carry the originals, and ask the branch whether it also wants photocopies. People searching "sukanya samriddhi yojana me kya kya documents chahiye" are asking for exactly this list.
Step by step: how to open the account
- Choose the place. Pick a post office or any bank branch approved for the scheme. Whichever you pick, the rate and rules stay identical.
- Get Form-1. Collect it at the counter, or print it from the scheme notification PDF that India Post hosts.
- Fill the form. Copy your daughter's name and birth date from her birth certificate without changes, then add your own details as guardian, matching your KYC papers.
- Attach papers. Attach the documents the branch asks for and the photographs.
- Pay the opening amount. The minimum is Rs 250, payable by cheque, demand draft or cash. After this, every deposit has to be a multiple of Rs 50.
- Collect the passbook. Check every printed detail before leaving.

Sukanya samriddhi yojana online: what works and what does not

- Opening: you cannot apply online and finish the whole thing from home. India Post opens the account only at its counters. SBI is a partial exception: its net banking users can fill the opening form on screen, but the printout, papers and Rs 250 still have to reach a branch.

Nobody needs to pay a middleman to apply online for this scheme. Keep OTPs and Aadhaar numbers away from callers and unknown links.
The forms used in this scheme
The Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019 sets out the forms used over the life of the account. The ones families meet most often are:
| Form | Used for |
|---|---|
| Form-1 | Opening the account |
| Form-2 | Closing the account after the death of the account holder |
| Form-3 | Partial withdrawal for the girl's education |
| Form-4 | Closing the account on maturity |
You can read the forms in the scheme notification PDF hosted by India Post. Withdrawals and closure are covered on our withdrawal rules page.
How many accounts can one family open
A daughter is allowed a single account in the whole country. Two daughters per family is the usual ceiling.
The twins and triplets exception
A family may go past two accounts if its first or second delivery produced twin or triplet daughters. In that case the guardian files an affidavit together with the birth certificates.
The exception does not cover every case. If the first birth already gave the family two or more surviving girls, a second birth of twins does not qualify for extra accounts. For example, a family whose first birth was twin girls can open accounts for both of them, but a later daughter would not get a third account under this exception.
Grandparents and the guardianship rule from October 2024
Many families had accounts opened by a grandparent. Rules from the Finance Ministry for irregular accounts across small savings schemes, applied from 1 October 2024, changed this for Sukanya accounts:
- Where a grandparent without legal guardianship opened the account, the guardian on record has to be changed to the mother, the father or the girl's legal guardian.
- If a family holds more than two accounts in breach of the rules, the extra ones are shut, except where the multiple-birth affidavit applies.
If a grandparent opened your daughter's account, take the parent's KYC papers and the girl's birth certificate to the branch and ask how to shift guardianship. Sources do not make clear how interest is treated on extra accounts that are closed, so ask the branch about that too.
Questions people ask
What are the sukanya samriddhi yojana documents required to open the account?
You need Form-1, your daughter's birth certificate, plus the guardian's ID and address papers such as Aadhaar or PAN. Counters also ask for photographs, and an affidavit is needed for twins or triplets.
Can a grandparent open a Sukanya Samriddhi account?
Only when that grandparent is her legal guardian. From October 2024, if a grandparent without that status opened it, guardianship must be transferred to a natural parent or the legal guardian.

One per girl, and two per family. More are allowed only when the first or second delivery brought twin or triplet girls, backed by an affidavit.

Can I download a sukanya samriddhi yojana form PDF?
Yes. India Post hosts the scheme notification as a PDF that includes the forms. Post offices and authorised banks also give out the paper form at the counter.
