The sukanya samriddhi yojana post office account is the most common way families open this savings account for a daughter, because almost every town has a post office counter that handles it. You fill Form-1 at the branch, show the girl's birth certificate and your KYC papers, and pay an opening amount of Rs 250 or more.

The India Post sukanya samriddhi yojana account works the same way in every state. Please note that we run an independent guide, not an India Post or government site; the account itself can only be started over the counter, either in a post office or in a bank branch the Government has authorised. Rules can change, so confirm the current position at your post office before you deposit.

Opening a sukanya samriddhi yojana post office account

A parent or legal guardian opens the account in the girl's name. She has to be younger than 10 when the account starts. One girl can have only one account, and a family can normally hold accounts for two daughters (twins or triplets are an exception, explained on our account opening page).

  1. Visit the post office near your home with the girl's birth certificate and your own identity and address proof.
  2. Ask the savings counter for Form-1 for a Sukanya Samriddhi Account.
  3. Fill the form, attach the documents the counter asks for, and sign it as guardian.
  4. Hand over the opening amount, Rs 250 or more, in cash or by cheque or demand draft.
  5. Collect the passbook and check the girl's name, date of birth and account number before you leave the counter.

There is no way to open this account fully online at India Post. Anyone offering to open it over a phone call or a link for a fee is not following the process.

Sukanya yojana post office form: how to fill it

The sukanya samriddhi yojana form in the post office is Form-1. The prescribed forms are part of the scheme notification, which India Post hosts as a PDF of the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019. Many people print the form from that PDF, but most counters also keep blank copies.

When you fill it, keep these points in mind:

  • Write the girl's name and date of birth exactly as they appear on her birth certificate.
  • Write your own details as guardian the same way they appear on your Aadhaar or other KYC document.
  • Tick the payment mode you are using: cash, cheque or demand draft.
  • Sign where the form asks for the guardian's signature, and check every field before you hand it in.

Field names can differ slightly on newer printed copies, so follow the labels on the form in your hand. If you are unsure, the counter clerk can point out each box.

Documents required in the post office

Under the scheme text you need Form-1, a birth certificate for the girl, and KYC papers of the guardian. In practice, the post office usually asks for:

  • the girl's birth certificate;
  • proof of who the guardian is and where they live (Aadhaar, PAN or similar);
  • photographs;
  • for twins or triplets, an affidavit from the guardian along with the birth certificates.

KYC means "know your customer", the identity check every savings account needs. Carry the originals, and ask the counter whether it also wants photocopies. The full list, with explanations, is on our documents and opening steps page.

Post office sukanya samriddhi yojana online payment

Once the account exists, you do not have to visit the branch every time you deposit. India Post allows two online routes for deposits into a post office Sukanya account:

  • IPPB app: the India Post Payments Bank app can send money to your Sukanya account if you hold an IPPB account linked to it.
  • DOP mobile banking: the India Post mobile banking service has a "DOP Products" option for deposits, which needs a linked savings account at the post office (POSB).

Both apps work only for deposits. They cannot open a new account. Menu names in the apps can change, so follow the labels shown on your screen. Never share an OTP (one-time password) with anyone who calls you about your account, and download apps only from the official app store listing.

At the counter, a recent India Post order lets Sukanya deposits up to Rs 50,000 be made with Aadhaar biometric authentication and no pay-in slip needed. Ask your branch whether it offers this.

Post office sukanya yojana details: deposit rules

Every post office in India follows one set of deposit rules:

RuleWhat it means
Minimum each yearRs 250 per financial year
Maximum each yearRs 1,50,000 per financial year; extra money gets no interest and is sent back
Deposit period15 years counted from opening
Maturity21 years counted from opening
Missed yearAccount becomes "in default"; revive by paying Rs 250 plus Rs 50 penalty for each missed year

Monthly interest uses the smallest balance seen from the 5th to the month end, so paying in by the 5th helps. Read the full rules on our deposit rules page.

Post office sukanya samriddhi yojana monthly 1000 example

Many parents plan around Rs 1,000 a month, which is Rs 12,000 a year. Here is what that gives if the rate stays at 8.2% a year for the full period, assuming the full year's Rs 12,000 goes in at the beginning of every year:

ItemAmount
Monthly savingRs 1,000 (Rs 12,000 a year)
Total you deposit over 15 yearsRs 1,80,000
Balance after 15 yearsRs 3,58,079
Maturity value at 21 yearsRs 5,74,570
Interest earnedRs 3,94,570

This is an illustration, not a promise. The Government revises the rate every quarter, so the real figure will differ. If you pay monthly instead of in one go by 5 April, the result will be a little lower. Try your own amount on our SSY calculator.

Same interest rate at the post office and in banks

The Ministry of Finance announces one rate for the whole scheme. The Department of Posts passes that notification to all post offices, and authorised banks apply the same figure. A post office account does not earn more or less than a bank account. The rate has been 8.2% since 1 January 2024. For this quarter's confirmed figure, look at the status box above the article, and our interest rate page lists past rates.

Interest gets added once a year when the financial year closes, and it is free from income tax.

Post office or bank: which should you choose

Both give the same rate, the same limits and the same tax treatment. The choice is about convenience:

  • Choose the post office if it is closer, if you already have a POSB or IPPB account, or if you want to use the IPPB app for deposits.
  • Choose a bank if you already bank there and want to deposit from its net banking or mobile app, where the bank offers that.

You can also move the account later. A Sukanya account can be transferred between post offices and banks anywhere in India. See our SBI and banks guide for the bank side. To read about the sukanya samriddhi yojana post office account in Hindi, see our Hindi page.
